Concord Medical President Jasmine Leads Delegation to the U.S. for In-Depth Exchange on Mayo Clinic’s Advanced Care Model
From September 2 to 5, 2025, Jasmine, President of Concord Medical, together with Rayden, Executive Assistant to the President, led an eight-member senior management delegation on an in-depth exchange visit to Mayo Clinic’s Rochester campus in the United States.
Under the theme of “Benchmarking Global Excellence and Exploring the Future of Healthcare,” the delegation engaged in a series of structured activities, including thematic presentations and on-site visits. The program focused on learning from Mayo Clinic’s internationally recognized expertise in care models, discipline development, and technological innovation, providing valuable insights to support Concord Medical’s ongoing efforts to optimize its healthcare delivery system and further advance the quality of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
During the visit, the delegation attended a series of keynote presentations delivered by Mayo Clinic experts, focusing on the institution’s care model, core values, and oncology practices. Dr. Brian Costello, Attending Physician in Medical Oncology, provided an in-depth overview of the origins and foundations of the Mayo Clinic Model of Care, tracing its evolution from a family-founded institution to more than 150 years of unwavering commitment to a patient-first philosophy.
Dr. Costello highlighted how the principle that “the needs of the patient come first” is embedded into daily clinical practice through a dual-track system that integrates multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration with physician leadership. He further elaborated on Mayo Clinic’s distinctive “three-shield” model—clinical practice, medical education, and scientific research—demonstrating how the close integration of these pillars has driven continuous innovation and excellence in patient care.
In addition, Dr. Costello referenced several landmark achievements in Mayo Clinic history, including the development of anti-gravity flight suits during World War II and the completion of the first artificial hip replacement surgery in the United States in 1969. These milestone innovations were cited as valuable benchmarks for Concord Medical Group as it continues to advance its clinical capabilities and strengthen discipline development.
Ann Pestorious, Human Resources Manager, focused her presentation on the practical implementation of organizational values, detailing how Mayo Clinic embeds its **seven core values—respect, integrity, compassion, and healing—**into daily staff behavior through a comprehensive framework encompassing recruitment, training, and incentive mechanisms. She explained that the recruitment process emphasizes both professional qualifications and values alignment, while staff training combines intensive onboarding programs with ongoing, values-based education integrated into daily operations.
Ann Pestorious also introduced Mayo Clinic’s “progressive correction” approach, which includes informal reminders, formal improvement plans, and, when necessary, termination, ensuring consistent standards of professional conduct. In addition, she highlighted the Karis Award recognition program, which honors employees who exemplify the institution’s core values. These practices offer practical and replicable pathways for Concord Medical Group to strengthen team culture, reinforce values-driven management, and enhance organizational cohesion.
In the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Sikander Ailawadhi, Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Mayo Clinic, shared the institution’s 2030 strategic vision: “Cure, Connect, Transform.” This strategy encompasses innovative approaches such as early cancer interception, home-based care expansion (including “home acute care” services), and AI-assisted diagnostics.
Dr. Ailawadhi highlighted Mayo Clinic’s disease-centric integrated collaboration model, which unites clinical care, education, and research, and noted operational details such as the use of patient scheduling coordinators to precisely plan visits. These insights offered the delegation a concrete understanding of how patient-centered care is effectively implemented.
Meanwhile, Mark Henderson, Senior Director of IT in the International Department, demonstrated the application of artificial intelligence in scenarios such as automated clinical note generation and intelligent radiology image interpretation, providing a clear roadmap for Concord Medical Group’s development of smart healthcare capabilities.
The delegation toured key areas of Mayo Clinic, including the oncology outpatient clinic, breast clinic, and proton therapy center, gaining first-hand insights into operational practices. At the oncology infusion center, the human-centered design of 53 dedicated treatment spaces and a triple-check system involving physicians, nurses, and pharmacists demonstrated the efficiency of multidisciplinary collaboration.
In the nuclear medicine ward, strict protocols for drug management—including cold-chain logistics for radioactive medications and tiered cost control—as well as robust safety measures—such as patient contamination prevention and radiation monitoring for medical staff—provided valuable reference points for the standardized operation of specialized treatment programs.
The delegation also explored Mayo Clinic’s Radiation Oncology Department, where the Varian TrueBeam series and Hitachi “PROBEAT-V” proton therapy system offered an in-depth view of the technological evolution in precision radiotherapy.
During a journey through the institution’s history and culture, the team was deeply moved by Mayo Clinic’s century-long commitment to its values—from its founding collaboration with nuns after the 1883 tornado to its current globally integrated healthcare network.
In the breast clinic, standards for multidisciplinary consultations—covering complex cases such as HER2-positive tumors and early recurrence in young patients—along with the bone marrow transplant unit in the oncology inpatient ward, featuring private rooms and HEPA filtration systems, further demonstrated that “patient needs come first” is not just a slogan, but a principle embedded in every operational detail.
In his closing remarks, Jasmine, President of Concord Medical Group, stated, “This visit not only provided a systematic overview of Mayo Clinic’s advanced medical philosophies and practical experiences, but also identified areas for enhancement within Concord Medical Group.” He emphasized that in the future, Concord Medical will translate key lessons—such as multidisciplinary collaboration, values implementation, and integration of technological innovation—into concrete actions.
On one hand, the group aims to optimize oncology service workflows and expand the “one-stop” multidisciplinary consultation model. On the other, it will accelerate the development of smart healthcare, exploring applications of AI in clinical support and patient management.
Concord Medical also plans to continue deepening collaboration with Mayo Clinic, promoting US-China medical resource sharing and academic exchanges, thereby supporting the high-quality development of oncology care in China.
This visit marks a significant milestone in Concord Medical’s internationalization journey and provides a model of cross-cultural cooperation for the global healthcare community. Moving forward, Concord Medical will continue to place patients at the center and leverage innovation as a driver, contributing Chinese expertise to global cancer prevention and treatment.
